It’s been a while since I really sat down to watch a show. Don’t get me wrong, I have definitely been watching TV recently but haven’t really taken the time to get into something new.
So here we are, Emily in Paris. Not the greatest name for a TV show but it sums it up pretty well.
Basically, Emily is working in a marketing firm in America, but ends up getting the opportunity to go to Paris in place of her boss who found out she was pregnant. The only problem is that Emily does not know French. Sounds like the beginnings of a cute comedy right?
It’s not totally wrong. I mean if you want something light and happy to watch, then this is your show. Plus, it’s only half an hour per episode so it’s a nice quick watch too. Which is nice relief from the usual 40 minute heavy drama shows I usually watch.
But after all ten episodes I’m still not sure how to feel about it? I didn’t instantly fall in love with it like I thought I might, it had the potential to be something I really enjoyed but something was pulling me out of it.
I think part of it was just the second hand embarrassment I felt for Emily because she didn’t speak French. And I know that’s the point but I don’t know, it bothered me lol. And I know she was trying to learn, but let’s be real, she probably will never learn French during the show running. Which is fine, but I don’t know, her half-failed attempts at the language were just annoying.
Then there’s the fact that she basically carries all the work of the advertising firm she works at. I mean sure it would be boring if she didn’t get good things to work on, but why is everyone there just not good at their job?
I also couldn’t figure out the purpose of Julien and Luc, I mean sure they were just mean co-workers and stuff in the beginning but by the end they were kind of friends with Emily? But really just serve as people who pretend to work along with the other couple of extras that are around. I don’t know if I like them or not, I was waiting for one of them to step up to be the work BFF we so know that Emily needs but no… Which just makes them seem kind of pointless to be honest.
Also Sylvie tries to be the boss bitch character which I often enjoy, but she is far from the Miranda Priestly I was half expecting her to be. There’s just something off about her which means I don’t like her very much. I don’t even know what it is, I just feel like she doesn’t have much personality besides hating on Emily and having an affair.
As for Emily herself, she’s just okay. I mean she always wears cute outfits and yes, is apparently amazing at her job. I’m not sure what else will come from her next though as she tries to get herself out of this weird love square thing she created for herself. I don’t imagine it’s going to go gracefully but we’ll see.
One thing I will say though is that they did a good job of literally not having any average looking men in Paris. Like honestly, that just doesn’t happen in real life, but that’s how these shows go lol. Everyone is always looking amazing and dressed to the nines, even if they aren’t supposed to afford it. I mean I know they aren’t making out Emily as poor, but I’m amazed at all the Chanel she can afford, plus her BFF Mindy wears so many fancy things and she makes even less money as a nanny.
Oh and another random point is that it’s so wild to see so many people smoking again on TV. I suppose I haven’t seen that much smoking indoors or out since Sex and the City lol. But it’s weird after not seeing it for so long. That being said, I think it would be amazing if we ever saw Sylvie finish a cigarette, talk about wasteful sis.
Overall though, it is a cute show. Something nice if you aren’t looking for something serious. But I did find myself wanting to like it but there was something off about it, not sure exactly what it is but it might just be a combination of everything I mentioned above and some other things too.
I’m not really sure where the next season will lead, apart from Emily trying to deal with the two love interests she has and also working with a man who’s wife basically said “yes sleep with my husband”. I mean definitely sounds like the kind of gossip and drama I love in life, but I guess it’s just not quite dramatic enough haha.
Oh well, it was still something nice to watch. I’m not sure when we will get another season but I’ll look forward to seeing what is next.
In the meantime, I will go back to making my way through the Originals. And probably watching Gossip Girl again because no one really does Paris like Blair Waldorf. And she even knows French.
